Eating Out

No, this article is not what you may have been hoping for! A friend of mine recently told me that he is not eating out anymore, that he only eats at home, feeling this is a healthier alternative. Eating at home can be healthy for several reasons, first because if you are eating at home you are hopefully eating with your family or loved ones which is very healthy for the mind and the spirit. Another reason is that you are cooking with whole foods; this is a way to monitor the amount of fat, protein and carbohydrates you get in a serving.

However, my friend was eating pre-packaged frozen dinners; if he cooked it was from a package, like those packages that you add to cream for Alfredo sauce. These are loaded with salt and preservatives, and are not a healthy option. If you eat out avoid fast food, if you are in a rush choose a fast food that is a healthy alternative, such as a chicken breast sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and onion, but no mayo, substitute salad with a low fat dressing instead of fries, and have water or a diet drink. This is not a science the same rules apply as if you were eating at home. Go for whole foods; try to get your 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day. If you order a steak (without sauce) in a restaurant, you know what you are getting; accompany it with a baked potato or wild rice, and a salad.
